Decking and railing to delight your
family and friends

Create your dream outdoor deck by calling or visiting one of our deck and railing experts at Milwaukie Lumber. We’ll help you capture the look and feel you want, enabling you create a beautiful outdoor space to entertain your loved ones, neighbors, and friends.

Deck frame materials

All framing materials should be rated for below or ground contact. If you need to bury wood in soil, Allweather Wood Pressure Treated structural timbers and dimension lumber are ideal for ground contact. We carry 2x4s through 2x12s, 4x4s through 4x12s, and 6x6s in this CA-C treated wood.
Tip: use ACQ-approved fasteners or Vycor's Deck Protector to protect metals from rusting.

Simpson offer a variety of special coated hangers to connect your frame together with ease. Treated lumber with higher chemical content for ground contact with actual retention levels greater than 0.40 pcf for ACQ, 0.34 pcf for MCQ, 0.21 pcf for CA-B, 0.15 pcf for CA-C and MCA, or 0.14 pcf for µCA-C require the use of stainless-steel products for fastening. When attaching the deck to your house, use lag screws or Fastenmaster Ledgerloks. We also recommend using concrete blocks, either 8”, 12”, or 18”, underneath your deck supports to allow for easier leveling and less digging.

Decking

With so many varieties available these days, it can be hard to decide what decking to use. When you visit Milwaukie Lumber, we’ll show you many decking samples to see and feel. Our qualified staff can explain the benefits of each product and share personal experiences regarding many of the decking products.

Composite decking has become extremely popular. It is virtually maintenance free and will last a lifetime. Milwaukie Lumber stocks Fiberon decking which offers you an unduplicatable look and feel whether you want to go with a traditional style or more of an exotic hardwood look. The color we stock in their Horizon series is Ipe which gives the look and feel of a hardwood deck with out all the hassle of real wood. In their Pro-Tect series we carry both the Western Cedar and the Gray Birch which both give a unique feel at a competitive cost.  Evergrain decking makes a difference you can see and feel, created by an exclusive molding process. Trex features the natural beauty of wood, but eliminates all the rotting and splintering. TimberTech also provides a wide selection of composite decking. We have many samples to help you choose the right style, texture, and color.

Tip: To help preserve the beauty of your wood deck, use Sunfrog, Superdeck, Mesmers or Penofin sealant.

Wood decking remains very popular. 2x6 radius-edge decking offers the charm and beauty of a cedar deck. Selected for optimal appearance, you rarely find a flawed board. Mahogany decking provides an exotic look and a denser surface. Naturewood's Appearance Grade Decking gives you long-lasting wood. It is pressure treated with Naturewood non-arsenic based preservative, has built in water repellent, and features a lifetime warranty against rot, decay, and insect attack.

Fastening systems

Just as your decking shows flair, so does the fastening system that attaches your decking to the frame. Hidden fastening systems like Camo, Phantom, and Tiger Claw produce a screw-free deck board. Kamelon, Deckfast, and Barracuda provide colored screws designed especially for composite decking. Grabber's ceramic coated screw is still one of the industry’s number one choices.

If a coated surface deck is your choice, then GacoDeck is your answer. This skid-resistant product offers a 50-year warranty and it’s been turning flat roofs into decks for years. Visit Milwaukie Lumber for color samples and tips for installing this one-of-a-kind product.

Railing systems

Once you’ve made your decking decision, enhance the deck with a railing system designed to offer protection, while adding beauty and attractive accents. We’ll help calculate the footage you need and provide expertise in choosing the right railing for your taste and budget.

Composite railing provides a maintenance-free design with a natural look. Horizon Railing by Fiberon offers durability, design and delight without all of the maintenance that comes along with wood railing. Evergrain offers four unique railings ranging from traditional to detailed styling. Trex multiple railings offer the same durability, strength, and timeless beauty as their decking. Ask us for options and personal testimony regarding each system.

Concerned about having your railing block your view? Fiberon also offers Clear Vision glass panelss which give a nice replacement for balusters to create an uninterrupted view.  CrystaLite glass panel railing systems are available in a number of tints and create the perfect windbreak while ensuring that your view remains intact. CrystaLite also offers cable rail or picket rail styles.

Tip: if you choose a composite decking, but are looking for a less expensive rail, use either cedar or Naturewood for the 2x4s and balusters, then add the composite decking as your top rail.

Traditional wood railing enhances any decking choices. We carry all the components to produce the rail of your dreams. 2x4 and 2x6 clear cedar, tight-knot cedar, or Naturewood are coupled with 2x2 clear cedar or Naturewood balusters to produce a protective, yet elegant rail.

Tip: when planning a railing, bring a sketch of your deck with measurements. That way our railing experts can easily assist you on pricing as well as the amount of products you’ll need.

A great way to personalize your rail is to use a different baluster. Deckorators deck balusters create deck rails that are the signature feature of your home’s overall outdoor experience. Fortress pickets feature a specialized dual galvanizing system and premium exterior powder coat finish that eliminate many maintenance concerns. Both products are available in many different styles and colors, so visit Milwaukie Lumber and we’ll help you achieve your desired look.

Patio covers

Suntuf polycarbonate corrugated sheets are ideal for patio covers. They offer high light transmission, strength, and a wide service temperature range. Each cover features a warranty against yellowing, loss of light transmission, and hail damage.

When your deck is finished, you’ll glow with pride at your accomplishment. Family and friends will enjoy your outdoor oasis for many years to come.
