What is a board foot?

A board foot is a volume measurement equal to a piece of lumber 1" thick × 12" wide × 12" long — or 144 cubic inches.

Lumber is priced and sold by the board foot. Knowing your BF count lets you compare pricing and estimate costs accurately.
